Ofsted inspects all new providers of education to judge the level of progress that is being made in relation to leadership and management, quality of education programmes for young people and safeguarding. Having inspected the Sixth Form College in January, the independent regulator of schools and college’s deemed Abbeygate to have made significant progress in every key area, with no recommendations – the best possible outcome.

The report details how “Students appreciate the strong sense of personal responsibility and greater independence they are given and how they value the mutual respect shown by both teachers and their peers” and also comments on how “Students benefit from highly effective tutorials and as a result of teachers’ frequent and effective feedback, they know how well they are achieving against their personal targets and how they can improve further.”

David Gartland, Principal, said: “This report recognises the huge amount that we have achieved in such a short period of time, in the most challenging of circumstances. I was so pleased inspectors experienced and captured everything that Abbeygate stands for as well as what we are looking to achieve as an organisation. The students were, as they always are, outstanding ambassadors for the college.”

The published inspection report also praises the Sixth Form College teachers for “using their extensive subject knowledge to prepare well-sequenced lessons and resources that consider students’ prior learning effectively” and for “effectively creating a positive and nurturing learning environment at the college.”
