Is it for me?
Are you interested in technology and want to understand how digital systems are used in the real world? The Digital V Level could be for you.
This course is ideal if you enjoy solving problems, working with technology and discovering how data and digital systems help organisations operate and make decisions.
You'll explore a broad range of digital topics, from data analysis to cyber security and computer systems. You'll also develop practical skills by working on realistic, work-related activities.
You don't need to have decided on a specific digital career yet. The V Level gives you a broad introduction to the sector and is designed to keep your options open, whether you're considering university, an apprenticeship or further technical study.
What you'll learn
You'll develop both technical knowledge and practical digital skills, learning how technology is used to solve problems and meet the needs of users and organisations.
Topics will include:
- Digital systems - understand hardware, software, networks, storage and how different components work together.
- Data and information - prepare, analyse and interpret data from different sources and use it to support decision-making.
- Data visualisation - communicate findings clearly using appropriate charts, tables and other visualisations.
- Artificial intelligence - explore how AI and automated systems can support data analysis and digital solutions, as well as their limitations and risks.
- Cyber security - recognise common cyber threats, understand security controls and investigate information from systems to identify potential security concerns.
- Problem solving - use computational thinking, logic, algorithms and structured approaches to solve digital problems.
- User experience and accessibility - consider how digital systems can be designed to meet the needs of different users.
- Ethical and responsible technology - explore data protection, privacy, bias, sustainability and the responsible use of digital technologies.
You'll also develop important transferable skills including problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and decision-making.
Equipment required for the course
You will have access to specialist computer facilities and the software required to complete your studies while at college.
We recommend having access to a laptop or desktop computer and internet connection at home so that you can continue working on projects and assignments outside of lessons, but this is not mandatory
You won't need to purchase specialist software for the course. Where possible, we use industry-standard, educational or freely available software and online tools.
Work experience placements
Developing an understanding of the workplace is an important part of your study programme and we will encourage you to undertake a work experience placement.
During your course, you'll have opportunities to develop your employability skills and learn about careers within the digital sector.
This could include employer-led projects, industry talks, workplace visits, careers activities, live briefs and other opportunities to work with digital professionals.
You'll apply your knowledge to realistic workplace scenarios throughout the course, helping you understand how the skills you're developing are used within different organisations.
Assessment
The Digital V Level combines knowledge and understanding with applied, work-related activities.
With this being such a new qualification, exact details of assessment have yet to be released but we expect it to involve a mixture of exams and controlled assessments.
Full assessment arrangements will be confirmed by the awarding organisation before the qualification begins.
Further study
The Digital V Level provides a strong foundation for progressing to higher-level study and training.
Depending on the combination of subjects you study and the entry requirements of your chosen provider, you could progress to:
- a university degree
- a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND)
- a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ)
- a higher apprenticeship
- a degree apprenticeship.
Possible areas of further study include Computing, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Development, Information Technology, Business Computing and Digital Technologies.
The V Level has specifically been designed to support progression into Level 4 and above study without requiring you to specialise in one digital occupation at 16.
Example careers
Studying digital systems and data could eventually lead to a wide variety of careers, including:
- Software Developer
- Data Analyst
- Cyber Security Analyst
- IT Support Technician
- Network Engineer
- Cloud Engineer
- Business Analyst
- Data Scientist
- AI Specialist
- Database Administrator
- Systems Analyst
- IT Project Manager
