Abbeygate Sixth Form College students recognised during annual awards event

Students at Abbeygate Sixth form College put their learners in the spotlight ahead of their exams by handing out awards to top performing students.
Teachers read out citations explaining the reasoning behind the accolades and over 30 youngsters received certificates, medals and a book.
Categories were in subject areas taught at the Bury St Edmunds educational establishment that forms part of Eastern Education Group and ranged from maths to media and sociology to Spanish.
Winners included a learner Leianna Norton who spends two and a half hours every day travelling to and from Abbeygate. Others like Amelie Taylor had set up sports teams and Frankie Freeman picked up the top drama award having starred in the recent college version of The Wedding Singer.
A series of ‘funny’ awards were also dished out in categories such as ‘most likely to become a millionaire or a TikTok star’ – and several students who had either completed or were in the process of completing a Duke of Edinburgh Award were also recognised.
Deputy Principal Stuart Small was the master of ceremonies alongside organiser, Nadine Payne. Nadine, the Group Director of Careers, Opportunities and Progression said: “We put on these awards as we wanted to create an uplifting and fun event to recognise the amazing contribution that our students bring to Abbeygate. We are incredibly proud of their efforts throughout the year in helping to make our sixth form one of the best in the county and the country.”
Later in the year, more Abbeygate students will be recognised at the annual Eastern Education Group’s celebration of achievement event that will be taking place on Monday 30 June 2025 at the cathedral in Bury St Edmunds.
