Geography
BackStudying Geography will help students better understand the world’s people, places and environments from the local to the global scales. With a broad curriculum, it equips young people with a wide range of transferable skills, ensuring it blends with other subjects studied and is relevant to almost all jobs and workplaces.
In Year 1 we study the core unit of Earth’s Life Support Systems, in which we investigate the water and carbon cycles and how these are affected by people in the tropical rainforests and the Arctic tundra. In the human core module ‘Changing Spaces Making Places’ we look at how places are defined by the activities carried out by the human population and how places evolve over time. In addition, we study the physical unit ‘Coastal Landscape Systems’ and the topical geographical debate of Climate Change.
We learn practical skills through compulsory fieldwork in London and East Anglia as well as the local area. This acts as preparation for an independent investigation carried out over the summer holidays and written up in Year 2.
“Geography has equipped me with research skills and enabled me to understand a broad range of important topics and global issues. The diversity of the course and the enthusiasm of the teachers inspires all students.”
Next Steps
Many successful students go on to study geography and geography related degrees at university. From here a wide range of careers are possible with geography graduates experiencing some of the lowest levels of graduate unemployment. Typically, geographers work in the following areas: Policy and Government, The Physical Environment, Geographical Information Systems, The Built Environment, Travel, Tourism and Leisure, The Business World, Society and Development and Global Issues.
There are many more options than teaching, conservation or colouring in! Many successful students are now choosing to use the variety of transferable skills learnt in Geography A Level to continue into employment and apprenticeships. Including both the arts and sciences, the world really is your oyster with a background in geography.
