A Level Music is a highly specialised and diverse qualification that develops the full range of transferable skills identified by the UK’s top employers. Musical engagement has been proven to have positive effects on brain development, cognitive function, wellbeing and memory. A Level Music develops an array of skills to equip students for success in a huge range of careers.

Music students will study three main components over two years: performing, composing and appraising. Through the in-depth analysis of eighteen set works, students will gain experience of techniques used by composers and performers of music from a wide range of genres. We study the compositional procedures behind the creation of music from these genres, including film music devices, popular song writing and instrumental music of the tonal era. We also explore the processes of practise and performance, looking closely at how professional performers work in the industry.

Students are free to devise a recital comprised of pieces of their choosing, and will have access to performance opportunities in and out of College throughout the course. Students will learn how music as we know it has evolved, and develop an understanding of how to control its elements in a way which is relevant to their musical identity.

‘Music A Level is a highly regarded choice for study in Sixth Form, and develops all of the seven skills that define employability’ (CBI, 2011)
