A Level Sociology enables us to make sense of the society we live in. Through studying Sociology you will explore issues that affect us as individuals and as members of groups, giving you an understanding of British society and culture, but also the globalised world we live in today.

A Level Sociology covers a broad range of sociological topics, along with theories and methodology. In Year 1 you will study Education plus Families and Households, analysing and evaluating the role and purpose of these social institutions in society. Alongside this you will study Research Methods used by sociologists to study society. In Year 2 you will study Crime and Deviance and The Media, again analysing and evaluating the significance of these aspects of society.

In addition you will continue to understand how Sociology studies society by developing your knowledge and understanding of Theory and Methods. Throughout the course you will explore how and why different social groups might have different, and also unequal, experiences in society today.

Next Steps

Many of our students go on to study Sociology at university, leading to careers in areas such as the law, social work, charity work, teaching or the Civil Service. Other students find opportunities through Apprenticeships, typically in the prison service, police force and journalism. Sociology students offer a range of skills for future employers. As well as subject knowledge, Sociology provides an understanding of the world and many transferable skills such as critical thinking.

Sociologists can also write analytical responses, conduct independent research, formally present findings and work independently designing practical sociological research. This interdisciplinary subject makes our students well suited to work in a variety of fields.
