Abbeygate Sixth Form College in Bury St Edmunds is set to perform Dick Whittington over two nights in December.

The College was first opened in 2019 and this is the first major production they have ever put on.

A cast of around 20 will be in this pantomime version of a classic tale that sees the main character travel to London in search of pavements made of gold.

4 Isaac Gallin Palmer is playing the dame Sarah the cook

Isaac Gallin-Palmer (pictured above), 16 from Bury St Edmunds is studying A levels and is playing Sarah the cook – the pantomime dame. Isaac said: “There are lots of comedy elements. It’s the first time I’ve played a dame and it’s been really fun. I think people should come along as it’s hilarious.”

3 Iris Billings is playing Dick Whittington

Iris Billings (pictured above), 17, is from Stanton and she is studying A levels. Iris is playing Dick Whittington in this production. She said: “I play the main man and hero of the production. I’ve been really enjoying rehearsals and can’t wait for people to see the final show. There will be lots of recognisable songs. It’s a typical panto. It’s funny, scary and lots will be going on.”

Director Sophie Allen (who is a teacher of drama at Abbeygate) said: “There are lots of references to Bury and the surrounding towns and villages just to make it more relatable to the audience. We started rehearsals in September and everything has been going well. All students from across the college are involved. Art students have painted the set and learners from across college will be involved in back stage roles, front of house duties or as part of the crew. It’s a real collaboration. I think people should come along as it’s a magical adventure with lots of audience participation and it’s a great night for all ages.”

The show lasts around two hours with an interval and will take place on 11 and 12 December 2023 – both shows start at 7pm. Tickets cost £10.00 and can be purchased via Eventbrite.  All proceeds will be used to put on future shows at a sixth form that was rated ‘outstanding’ earlier this year by Ofsted.
